What Do You Need for an AEA Distinction?

Edexcel AEA Maths 9811, every June series from 2019 to 2026. A Distinction has cost anywhere from 50 to 77 marks out of 100, which is the widest swing of any maths qualification we track.

There is no published pass mark for the Advanced Extension Award, and if you go looking for one you will find a different answer every year. That is not a mistake in the record. The number really does move that much.

Here is every June series since 2019, on the one paper, out of 100, with the share of candidates who reached each grade beside it. The two years showing no marks had no exams, and there is a section on them below.

AEA is graded Distinction and Merit only, so a student below the Merit line gets no grade, and the two shares together never reach 100. A series with a cohort under a quarter of the largest here is greyed and left off the figure above, which names it: a few thousand candidates sitting a specification early is a fact about who sat it rather than about the standard. Each share is the students who got that grade itself, so the rows do not add up to the figure Pearson publishes, which counts everyone at that grade or above. An asterisk marks a year whose shares are Pearson's first published figures, which it revises later; the boundaries on that row are final. No summer exams were sat in 2020 or 2021, so there are no boundaries for those two years. The grades came from teacher assessment instead, which is why they are the two highest lines in the table. Boundaries are from Pearson's notional component documents and shares are from Pearson's grade statistics. Both are linked on the GCSE maths past papers page, series by series.

A Distinction has cost between 50 and 77 marks. That is a 27 mark swing on a 100 mark paper, and it is the widest of any maths qualification on this site. GCSE Higher moves 11% of its scale, A-Level maths 17%, Further Maths 22%. AEA moves 27%.

So what should you actually train for?

77.

Ignore the 2022 line for a moment, because that summer was graded generously on the way back from the pandemic. Since 2023 a Distinction has needed 65, 72, 77 and 66. The highest of those is 77, and the year you walk into a paper that suits you is exactly the year the bar will be at its highest.

For a Merit the same logic gives 54, the top of 43, 48, 54 and 43.

Those are training targets, not predictions. Nobody knows what this year’s paper will ask for, including the exam board, because the number is set after the marking.

Roughly half the entry gets no grade at all

This is the part nobody tells you before you enter, and it matters more than the boundary.

AEA is graded Distinction and Merit. There is nothing below a Merit. In June 2026, 50.1% of candidates reached a Merit or better, so 49.9% came away with no grade. In 2019 it was 54.9%. In 2024, 54.0%.

These are not weak mathematicians. They are students strong enough to have been entered for an extension paper on top of A-Level Further Maths. About half of them get nothing, every year, by design.

Read that as the paper doing its job rather than as a warning. AEA exists to separate the top of a cohort that A-Level already grades as A*, and a paper that did not fail half the room could not do that. But go in knowing it.

Why the number jumps around so much

Three things stack up.

It is one paper. Your whole grade rests on three hours. A-Level maths spreads the same risk across three papers out of 300, so a hard question on one of them gets diluted. On AEA it does not.

The questions are hard on purpose, which makes them hard to calibrate. A question that the setters expect to take twenty minutes can turn out to take ten, or to defeat almost everybody, and there is no way to know until the scripts come back.

The cohort is tiny. Between 277 and 395 students sat each of these June series. Small cohorts produce noisier results than large ones, so there is more year to year movement even when nothing has really changed.

Put those together and you get a boundary set after marking, on one unpredictable paper, for a few hundred students. Ofqual’s guidance explains what the boundary is for:

If an exam is easier than in previous years, the grade boundaries for that paper will be higher. If it is harder, the grade boundaries will be lower.

So a high AEA boundary is telling you the paper was accessible that year. It is not telling you the year group was stronger.

The proof of that is in the last two years

June 2025 wanted 77 marks for a Distinction. June 2026 wanted 66, eleven fewer. If the boundary measured the students, that would mean the 2026 cohort was substantially weaker.

The share getting a Distinction went from 16.2% to 15.9%. Three tenths of a point.

The year before makes the same point from the other direction. The boundary went up five marks, from 72 to 77, and the share getting a Distinction went up too, from 12.5% to 16.2%. Boundary up, outcomes up, in the same series. There is no fixed link between the two, which is the whole reason you cannot read one off the other.

The two years to ignore

June 2020 and June 2021 show 31.9% and 38.9% getting a Distinction, against about 12.5% in a normal year.

There were no exams in either summer. Grades came from teachers instead. In 2021 only 23.9% came away with no grade, against about half in every year that had a paper.

There is also an October 2020 sitting, which needed 57 marks for a Distinction. Pearson published boundaries for it but no statistics document, so we can tell you what it cost and not how many got there.

What to do with this

Train for 77 out of 100, and treat 54 as the floor. The range is wide enough that aiming at the middle of it is a coin toss.

Do not use last year’s number as this year’s target. It describes last year’s paper. Every time the Distinction line has changed since 2019 it has moved by at least five marks, and twice it moved by more than fifteen.

Work in whole questions, not marks. On a paper this volatile, the difference between a Merit and a Distinction is often one complete solution. Finishing three questions properly beats starting six.

Expect to leave things out. Half the entry gets no grade, and the students who do well are usually the ones who chose which questions to abandon early rather than the ones who tried everything.
