Grammar Schools in Essex

The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex writes and administers its own English and maths papers — it is not a reseller of GL, CEM or Quest material, which makes generic 11+ practice papers a poor fit.

What families in Essex need to know

  • CSSE was formed in 1993 and its 2027-entry guide covers ten schools across Essex and Southend, including three partially selective non-grammars: Shoeburyness High, St Bernard's High and St Thomas More High.
  • Chelmsford County High School for Girls is not in CSSE. For September 2027 entry it uses the FSCE test, sat on Thursday 3 September 2026.
  • Because CSSE sets its own papers, preparation should use CSSE-specific past material rather than GL-style practice.
